Arvind Kejriwal Questions Meta Over Alleged Instagram Restriction In India

Former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday questioned Meta over the alleged restriction of his Instagram account in India, claiming that the company had provided neither an explanation nor a solution.

In a post on X, the Aam Aadmi Party National Convenor said verbal enquiries at Meta’s India office indicated that the company had restricted his account and made it unavailable in the country.

Kejriwal alleged that Meta officials had not explained the reason for the action or advised him on getting the restriction removed. He added that the company had sent only routine acknowledgements in response to his emails.

Calling the response ‘pretty bad service’, Kejriwal also accused Meta of yielding to pressure from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Kejriwal’s allegations followed Meta’s apology for temporarily restricting PM Modi’s Facebook post.

Joel Kaplan apologised to IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, while Meta representatives acknowledged platform lapses during government meetings.

The development has intensified scrutiny of Meta’s content moderation practices in India.

Government sources also claimed that Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg had expressed regret over concerns involving child sexual abuse material, deepfakes and other objectionable or manipulated content on the company’s platforms.

According to the sources, government officials questioned whether Meta could claim the legal protections available to neutral intermediaries if its systems actively selected and distributed content to particular users.

Officials reportedly warned the company that such activity could affect its eligibility for safe-harbour protection under India’s Information Technology Act.

Meta had not publicly responded to Kejriwal’s allegations at the time of the report.
