Last sitting of the 17th Lok Sabha
During the final session of the 17th Lok Sabha, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reflected on the transformative journey of the past five years, encapsulating it as a period of ‘reform, perform, and transform’ for the nation. Expressing gratitude, particularly to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, PM Modi highlighted the resilience displayed by the Parliament amidst the challenges, notably the COVID-19 pandemic, which necessitated innovative modes of operation. He commended the MPs for their willingness to reduce their salaries by 30% and discontinue subsidies on canteen food, demonstrating a commitment to fiscal prudence and public accountability.
Addressing the transition to the new Parliament building, PM Modi reminisced about the inauguration of the Sengol, marking a significant milestone in the institution’s history. He underscored the historic decisions made during the term of the 17th Lok Sabha, including the abrogation of Article 370, a long-awaited move that he believed would be blessed by the framers of the Constitution.
Emphasizing the principle of ‘minimum government, maximum governance,’ PM Modi advocated for a governance model that empowers citizens and minimizes state intervention in their lives, fostering a culture of trust and responsibility. He recounted legislative achievements such as the passage of the triple talaq bill and the initiation of the women’s reservation bill, symbolizing progress toward gender equality and inclusive representation.
Looking ahead, PM Modi envisioned a prosperous future for India, envisaging a ‘Vikshit Bharat’ (developed India) within the next 25 years. Acknowledging the imminent electoral cycle, he affirmed the significance of elections as a cornerstone of democracy, embracing the democratic process with pride and reverence.
