Any decision on ties with AAP as per party leaders’ sentiments: Cong’s Punjab in-charge

Devender Yadav, the Congress’ Punjab affairs in-charge, conveyed that any decision regarding a potential alliance with the AAP for the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections in the state will be made under the sentiments of the state unit.

This development emerged as the Congress and AAP engaged in discussions in Delhi concerning seat sharing in Punjab and Delhi for the upcoming general elections. They agreed to reconvene to finalize the arrangement between the two parties forming the INDIA bloc.

Yadav embarked on a three-day visit to Punjab, his inaugural visit to the state following his appointment as the state in-charge by the Congress last month. During his stay, he is scheduled to meet with senior leaders of Punjab Congress, party MLAs, and block presidents.

Upon his arrival in Amritsar, Yadav paid visits to prominent religious sites, including the Golden Temple, Durgiana Temple, and Bhagwan Valmiki Tirath. His visit to Amritsar was accompanied by Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring, Leader of Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa, and former state unit chief Navjot Singh Sidhu.

Addressing reporters in Amritsar, Yadav mentioned that a meeting with office bearers, senior leaders, and block presidents in Chandigarh would be instrumental in gauging public sentiment. He emphasized that the decision regarding an alliance with the AAP would be guided by the feelings of local leaders and the populace, as highlighted by the party leadership.

However, there exists dissent among some Punjab Congress leaders who oppose an alliance with the ruling AAP for the Lok Sabha polls.

In response to queries, Yadav reaffirmed the Congress’s resilience in addressing social and political issues at various levels, from grassroots activism to legislative assemblies.

Regarding rallies held by party leader Navjot Singh Sidhu, Yadav refrained from commenting, expressing the need to consult with other party leaders before responding. Sidhu’s recent rallies had triggered reactions from within the Congress, prompting calls for his participation in party events instead of organizing independent gatherings.

Punjab Congress President Warring clarified that while he has no objection to Congress members organizing rallies, discipline must be maintained by all individuals, irrespective of their positions within the party.

In a separate interaction with reporters in Amritsar, Sidhu defended his stance on rallies, stating that he has not impeded anyone from organizing or attending events. He pledged full support to the party’s Punjab in-charge Yadav and emphasized his commitment to representing and fighting for the interests of the Punjabi population.

Moreover, Warring criticized the AAP government for filing another case against Congress MLA Sukhpal Khaira post his bail granted by the Punjab and Haryana High Court in a previous case related to the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act. This action was denounced as a mockery of democracy.
