Amit Shah Sets 20% Green Cover Target For Gandhinagar By 2029

Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah on Sunday set an ambitious goal of expanding the green cover in the Gandhinagar Lok Sabha constituency to 20 per cent before the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.

Addressing a large-scale plantation campaign in Ahmedabad, Shah noted that greenery in the constituency has already reached approximately 11.23 per cent and called for collective efforts to achieve the new milestone.

Shah called the initiative a mission close to his heart and pledged to increase the constituency’s green cover to 20 per cent by the next parliamentary elections. He encouraged residents and housing societies to utilise every available open space for planting trees, stressing that the campaign would succeed only through active public participation.

Shah also launched a strong appeal for the wider adoption of rooftop solar systems throughout the constituency. He said Gandhinagar currently leads all parliamentary constituencies in rooftop solar installations, according to the latest assessment by the Central government.

Shah urged homeowners and residential societies to install solar panels to power common facilities such as lifts and streetlights while reducing household electricity bills. He said greater adoption of solar energy would reduce dependence on conventional power, lower carbon emissions, and help bring down urban temperatures.

Shah called on citizens to turn environmental conservation into a long-term public movement by planting more trees and installing rooftop solar panels on every home. He said the Gandhinagar Lok Sabha constituency was expected to plant more than 1.25 crore saplings by Sunday afternoon.

Later in the day, Shah announced that he would personally join plantation programmes in Thaltej, Sarkhej, and Stadium wards.
