Amit Shah Says UCC Will Not Affect Tribal Rights Or Traditions

Union Home Minister Amit Shah firmly stated that the Uniform Civil Code will not interfere with the rights or traditions of tribal communities.

Addressing a large gathering, Shah urged people to reject misinformation being spread to create divisions in society.

What Shah Said at the Tribal Conclave

Speaking at the ‘Janjati Sanskritik Samagam’ held at the historic Red Fort, the Minister described the current government as deeply committed to tribal welfare. He encouraged attendees to spread awareness in their respective regions and reassure others that the proposed law poses no threat.

Shah pointed out that states such as Uttarakhand and Gujarat have already introduced the UCC while keeping tribal communities outside its scope. He emphasised that the framework would not restrict any cultural practices or traditions of tribal groups.

Highlighting the deep connection between tribal communities and nature, Shah noted that their way of life represents one of the most sustainable models globally. He added that their traditions align closely with the principles of Sanatan Dharma and play a crucial role in preserving ecological balance.

Referring to policy measures, Shah said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi significantly increased funding for tribal welfare to ₹1.5 lakh crore, compared to ₹28,000 crore during previous administrations. He also credited former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee for establishing the Tribal Affairs Ministry, which strengthened institutional support for the community.

Shah highlighted the elevation of Droupadi Murmu as the first tribal President of India, calling it a historic milestone. He also noted that several states currently have tribal Chief Ministers, reflecting growing political inclusion.

The Home Minister stated that the government has significantly curbed Maoist activities, transforming former security camps into centres for community development. He criticised earlier governments for neglecting the issue, which led to prolonged violence in tribal regions.

Calling for collective progress, Shah urged citizens to work towards the vision of Viksit Bharat by 2047.

How Big the Event Was

The conclave, organised by the Janjati Suraksha Manch, witnessed participation from over 1.5 lakh representatives belonging to more than 550 tribal communities, showcasing vibrant cultural traditions through processions across Delhi.
