Amit Shah Says Bharat Taxi Gives Drivers Ownership, Not Just Jobs

Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah on Saturday launched Bharat Taxi in Gujarat, describing it as a cooperative initiative built on a philosophy that values taxi operators as ‘Sarathis’ instead of merely drivers.

Addressing thousands of taxi operators, the Minister said the platform differs fundamentally from existing app-based ride-hailing services by offering ownership, dignity and long-term security.

Shah said private companies usually regard taxi operators only as drivers.

In contrast, Bharat Taxi recognises them as Sarathis, reflecting a deeper respect for their contribution.

Shah said this distinction represents the core difference between commercial platforms and the cooperative movement.

The Home Minister noted that India’s mobility sector has transformed significantly over the past three to four decades. He said taxis, once viewed as a limited transport option, have now become an essential part of everyday life, with growing demand across the country.

Recalling his visit to the Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, Shah shared how he encountered motorcycles operating as taxis.

After questioning one rider, the Minister learned that motorcycles transported pilgrims between the railway station and the Kumbh venue because four-wheelers could not enter the area. He cited the example to demonstrate the sector’s evolving nature.

Shah also highlighted Gujarat’s changing transport landscape, stating that auto-rickshaws have become an integral part of organised taxi services and significantly expanded urban mobility. He said Bharat Taxi ensures that transport operators become shareholders rather than remaining dependent on private digital platforms.

According to Shah, nearly seven lakh Sarathis associated with Bharat Taxi own shares in the cooperative. He added that ownership gives members dignity, financial security and future prosperity while making them active participants in the enterprise.
