Amit Shah Pays Tribute To Bal Gangadhar Tilak On His Death Anniversary

Union Home Minister Amit Shah paid rich tribute to Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak on his death anniversary today, calling him a visionary leader who laid the foundation for India’s freedom struggle.

In a heartfelt post on social media, Shah highlighted Tilak’s unparalleled contributions to India’s political awakening and cultural resurgence.

Tilak Made Swaraj a Mass Movement

Shah stated that Tilak was among the first leaders to transform the demand for Swaraj (self-rule) into a mass movement, igniting the spirit of independence among millions.

He recalled how Tilak’s powerful slogan, “Swaraj is my birthright and I shall have it,” became the rallying cry for India’s freedom fighters.

The Home Minister credited Tilak with making Swadeshi (indigenous goods and self-reliance) a matter of national consciousness. He noted that Tilak elevated India’s cultural heritage as a source of national pride, helping people reconnect with their roots during colonial rule.

Shah pointed out that Tilak used festivals like Ganesh Utsav and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti as tools to promote social unity and awaken nationalistic fervour.

Tilak’s public celebrations helped unite diverse communities through a shared cultural identity.

A Voice Against Social Injustice

Shah also emphasised Tilak’s progressive stand against untouchability. He praised Tilak for challenging social inequalities and promoting inclusivity ahead of his time.

Calling Lokmanya Tilak a ‘timeless source of inspiration’, Shah said his thoughts, actions, and values continue to guide India.

He urged citizens to remember Tilak not just as a freedom fighter.

He also asked them to see him as a social reformer and cultural icon who shaped the national spirit.

Tilak, one of the key architects of modern India, passed away on August 1, 1920. His enduring legacy remains central to the country’s journey toward self-rule and national unity.
