Amit Shah Oversees Nationwide Tree Plantation Drive By Security Forces

Personnel of India’s central security forces, who guard the country’s borders and strategic installations, are also playing an active role in protecting the environment.

Alongside their primary duty of national security, these forces are now participating in a large-scale tree plantation campaign aimed at combating pollution and promoting ecological balance.

The initiative, launched under the guidance of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, has gained significant momentum over the past five years.

According to official figures, more than 1.1 million personnel from various central armed police forces have collectively planted nearly 70 million saplings across different parts of the country.

Officials say the campaign reflects a broader commitment to environmental protection while encouraging security personnel to contribute to sustainable development.

The plantation drive began in January 2020 when Union Home Minister Amit Shah proposed planting one crore saplings annually.

As part of the initiative, the Assam Rifles took responsibility for restoring greenery in the Cherrapunji and Sohra plateau regions of Meghalaya.

Over three years, its personnel planted nearly one million saplings across about 1,000 hectares, helping restore degraded vegetation.

The campaign focuses on indigenous, long-living trees such as neem, peepal, tamarind, banyan and shisham, planted around security camps and nearby areas.

These species offer long-term environmental benefits and can survive for up to a century.

Officials say the effort aims not only to expand green cover but also to absorb carbon dioxide and support climate balance.

Amit Shah personally monitors the initiative and has planted saplings during visits to cities including Kolkata, Cherrapunji, Gurugram, Nanded, Kishanganj in Bihar, and Jammu and Kashmir.

Local commanding officers oversee the care of these plants and submit regular progress reports.
