Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated the Jayaprakash Narayan Public Library, a modern three-level digital and multimedia library established by the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), on Saturday.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, NDMC Chairperson Keshav Chandra, and Vice Chairman Kuljeet Singh Chahal attended the launch of the new public facility.
Speaking at the event, Shah said every nation’s development begins with knowledge, making libraries indispensable institutions for social and intellectual progress. He emphasised that reading broadens perspectives, develops critical thinking and helps individuals make informed decisions based on understanding rather than assumptions.
The Home Minister also urged the Delhi government to create a unified digital network connecting all public libraries in the city and strengthen links between libraries and schools to encourage students to read regularly.
Encouraging young people to embrace books, Shah said regular reading can bring lasting changes to a person’s personality and thought process.
Reflecting on his childhood, the Minister shared that a small public library in his hometown played a significant role in shaping his life and inspired his interest in learning.
HM Shah said the newly opened library offers more than 30,000 books and access to nearly one crore digital titles through its e-library platform.
The facility includes dedicated sections for children, researchers and general readers, along with spacious reading areas, a research centre, a multipurpose auditorium and free Wi-Fi throughout the premises.
Shah added that the extensive digital collection would enable Delhi residents to access quality educational resources without any cost.
Remembering Jayaprakash Narayan, Shah described him as a visionary freedom fighter and a steadfast advocate of democracy who devoted his life to public service and social transformation.
