Union Home Minister Amit Shah conveyed his grief following a tragic fire in Vivek Vihar, calling the incident deeply upsetting. He offered his sympathies to the families who lost their relatives in the disaster.
The fire erupted at about 4 AM on Sunday in a residential building in the area’s B-Block, reportedly after an air-conditioner unit exploded.
Flames rapidly spread to the second floor, leading to the deaths of nine individuals, including a young child, and leaving others injured.
Emergency services acted quickly, sending 14 fire engines to control the situation.
Police teams and senior officers reached the location without delay and supervised the rescue work, during which 15 people were safely evacuated.
Firefighters managed to contain the blaze by around 6 AM after sustained efforts. Those injured were transported to nearby hospitals, including Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital, for immediate care.
Shah stated that officials are ensuring the injured receive the best available medical attention. He also expressed hope for their quick recovery and confirmed that assistance is being provided to all affected families.
Initial reports have confirmed nine fatalities, while authorities continue to investigate the exact cause of the incident.
Officials remain engaged in on-site inquiries to establish the sequence of events and prevent similar occurrences in the future.
