In the wake of the devastating terror attack that claimed numerous innocent lives on Tuesday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah conducted a security review in Pahalgam’s Baisaran meadow on Wednesday.
Arriving by helicopter, the Union Minister took an aerial survey of the area before descending onto the site, which now bears the scars of the violence.
Top security officials accompanied Shah as he walked through the area and received a briefing on the current situation and ongoing operations.
The visit comes amid a heightened security alert across the Kashmir Valley following the deadly attack, which targeted tourists in one of the region’s most popular destinations.
The attack is one of the most significant since the revocation of Article 370 in 2019, although the government has yet to release an official death toll.
Prior to his visit to Pahalgam, Amit Shah paid his respects to the victims in a solemn ceremony and met with grieving families at the Police Control Room in Srinagar.
Taking to X, Shah posted, “With a heavy heart, paid last respects to the deceased of the Pahalgam terror attack. Bharat will not bend to terror. The culprits of this dastardly terror attack will not be spared.”
Meanwhile, a team from the National Investigation Agency (NIA) arrived at the site to assist the Jammu and Kashmir Police with the investigation.
The NIA team, led by a Deputy Inspector General, visited Baisaran a day after terrorists attacked a group of tourists in the scenic meadow, which is located around five kilometres from Pahalgam town in Anantnag district.
Sources close to the development confirmed that the NIA team would work closely with local authorities to aid the investigation.
The Resistance Front (TRF), a proxy of the Pakistan-based terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba, has claimed responsibility for the attack.
The NIA team will likely conduct a detailed assessment of the attack site, gather forensic evidence, and work towards identifying the perpetrators of this deadly assault.
