PM Modi Cancels Kanpur Visit Following Deadly Terror Attack In Jammu & Kashmir

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called off his scheduled visit to Kanpur on 24 April after a deadly terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, claimed the lives of 26 people, including Shubham, a young man from Kanpur.

PM Modi was likely to inaugurate and lay the foundation for development projects worth over Rs 20,000 crore during his visit.

A statement issued by the Prime Minister’s office noted, “As a mark of respect, it was considered appropriate to defer any celebratory or formal public engagement in Kanpur during this period of grief.”

While the Kanpur visit has cancelled, PM Modi will attend a previously scheduled programme in Madhubani, Bihar, on 24 April to mark Panchayati Raj Diwas.

This event will conducted virtually, with participation from citizens across the nation.

The Prime Minister, who was in Saudi Arabia at the time of the attack, returned to India early on Wednesday.

Upon arrival, PM Modi convened a high-level meeting at Delhi’s airport with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar.

A meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) is likely for 6 PM today to discuss the developments.

The attack, the deadliest in the region since the 2019 Pulwama tragedy, occurred on Tuesday in Baisaran, a picturesque meadow in Anantnag district, which can only reached on foot or by pony.

The attack targeted tourists in the area.

The Resistance Front, a shadow group linked to the banned Pakistan-based terror organisation Lashkar-e-Taiba, has reportedly claimed responsibility for the attack, though official confirmation from the government is pending.

PM Modi condemned the attack, vowing that those responsible for this ‘barbaric act’ would brought to justice.
