Lucknow: Akhilesh Yadav, the leader of the Samajwadi Party, has thrown his weight behind climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, who is currently on a hunger strike in Leh advocating for Ladakh’s statehood.
Yadav aimed at the ruling party, questioning, “How can the BJP understand the significance of those fasting with just ‘water and salt’ when its vision has dimmed, and it’s oblivious to repaying the ‘debt of salt’?” Wangchuk, known for his environmental activism, appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, urging them to heed their demand for statehood while emphasizing the crucial need to preserve Ladakh’s fragile ecology.

In a social media post, the former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh declared solidarity with Sonam Wangchuk’s cause to safeguard Ladakh’s interests and the nation’s borders. He pledged “full support” to ensure the success of Wangchuk’s endeavor, criticizing the BJP for its arrogance, which he believes has clouded its judgment.
Yadav asserted that the BJP’s arrogance has rendered it incapable of seeing, hearing, or understanding the ground realities. He underscored the declining stature of the BJP and shared a video of Wangchuk’s plea, lasting over four minutes, amplifying the activist’s message.
