The indigenously developed Akash surface-to-air missile system proved critical in neutralising multiple Pakistani drone attacks on Indian military assets late Thursday, defence officials confirmed.
Both the Indian Army and the Indian Air Force have deployed the Akash missile system along the Pakistan border to bolster air defence capabilities.
“The Made-in-India Akash surface-to-air missile air defence system has been effectively used by the Indian armed forces in foiling Pakistani attacks targeting Indian positions,” officials stated.
During the night of May 8–9, Indian forces repelled and responded to several drone attacks and ceasefire violations initiated by Pakistan along the western border and the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir.
“Pakistan Armed Forces launched multiple attacks using drones and other munitions along the entire Western Border. They also violated the ceasefire several times along the LoC in Jammu and Kashmir,” the Indian Army said in an official statement.
The statement further added, “We repulsed all drone attacks effectively and gave a befitting reply to the ceasefire violations. The Indian Army remains committed to protecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the nation.”
The Akash missile system, developed in India, is a medium-range, surface-to-air missile platform designed to defend against multiple air threats.
It protects mobile, semi-mobile, and static targets and features advanced capabilities like real-time multi-sensor data processing and simultaneous engagement of targets from any direction.
The system intercepts incoming threats using command guidance and phased array radar, and its cross-country mobility and scalable operations allow it to function in both autonomous and coordinated modes.
Earlier on Thursday, Indian forces shot down more than 50 Pakistani drones during a massive counter-drone operation conducted along the Line of Control and International Border, defence sources told the media.
The Indian Armed Forces also thwarted a larger drone and missile assault planned by Pakistan targeting multiple Indian military sites across northern and western India during the night of May 7–8.
In a significant move, Indian defences reportedly neutralised a Pakistani air defence system stationed in Lahore.
