AIIMS Delhi Sets New Benchmark With 1,000+ Robotic Surgeries In Just 13 Months

The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Delhi has crossed a major healthcare milestone by performing more than 1,000 robotic surgeries in the last 13 months.

The achievement places the country’s premier public hospital at the forefront of advanced surgical care.

AIIMS introduced robotic surgery at its Department of Surgical Disciplines over a year ago to tackle complex and high-risk procedures.

Since then, surgeons have used the state-of-the-art robotic system to deliver precision-driven, minimally invasive operations across multiple specialities.

The robotic platform has enabled a wide range of advanced procedures. Surgeons have performed hepatobiliary surgeries such as pancreatic duodenectomy, gastrectomy, esophagectomy, colectomy, and anterior resections for gastrointestinal cancers.

The system has also supported complex abdominal wall reconstructions for hernias, kidney transplants, and minimally invasive surgeries of the thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal glands, and pancreas for endocrine tumours.

AIIMS described the development as a transformative step. The institute said the department now ranks among the first General Surgery units in any Indian government hospital to deploy such cutting-edge technology.

Officials emphasised that robotic adoption strengthens precision, safety, and patient outcomes while expanding access to advanced care.

For years, private hospitals in metro cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, and Chennai have dominated robotic surgery, particularly in urology and gynaecology.

AIIMS has narrowed this gap by introducing advanced robotics into a public healthcare environment.

The move ensures patients from diverse socio-economic backgrounds receive world-class surgical treatment.

Professor Sunil Chumber, Head of the Department, highlighted the academic impact of the initiative. He said over 100 surgical residents train at the department at any given time.

Robotic integration allows residents to gain hands-on exposure to next-generation surgical tools during their residency.

This training now matches global standards followed by leading international medical institutes.

Robotic surgery delivers multiple clinical advantages. It reduces blood loss, shortens hospital stays, and accelerates patient recovery.

The technology proves especially valuable for procedures requiring extreme precision in tight anatomical spaces.

The robotic system offers surgeons a magnified three-dimensional view and unmatched dexterity through robotic arms.

This combination allows meticulous dissection and suturing, improving outcomes and reducing complications.
