Ahmedabad Plane Crash: A devastating Ahmedabad plane crash occurred on Thursday when an Air India Boeing 787-8 aircraft crashed into the hostel building of BJ Medical College minutes after taking off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Airport.
The flight was carrying 242 people, including 12 crew members and former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani. Only one person survived, while 241 passengers lost their lives.
The Supreme Court expressed deep grief over the tragedy. Chief Justice of India Bhushan Ramakrishna Gavai (CJI BR Gavai) and fellow judges extended their condolences to the bereaved families.
A release from the apex court stated, “The Chief Justice of India and fellow judges of the Supreme Court, along with the officials of the registry, express their deepest condolences to the families affected by the tragic air accident in Ahmedabad today.”
CJI BR Gavai also conveyed concern for the BJ Medical College community. The crash caused extensive damage to buildings on the campus. More than 20 students and staff of the medical college also died in the incident.
The CJI said, “Our condolences and prayers are with them in this difficult time. May they find strength and solace in the support of their loved ones.”
The tragedy sent shockwaves across the country. Political leaders and eminent personalities shared messages of grief and solidarity.
Following the crash, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) ordered immediate additional maintenance checks on all Boeing 787-8 and 787-9 aircraft powered by GenX engines. The aviation authority aims to ensure flight safety and prevent such accidents in future.
Meanwhile, the Tata Group, which owns Air India, announced ₹1 crore compensation for the families of each victim of the Ahmedabad plane crash.
