Dharavi Paving The Path To a World-Class Mumbai
Mumbai, Sep 1: Dharavi residents have shown strong support for the state government’s survey related to the $3 billion redevelopment project. Several NGOs working in the world’s largest slum have also pledged their backing.
At least eight NGOs and citizen welfare associations have met with Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP) CEO S.V.R. Srinivas to express their support for the ongoing survey. These organizations have also written to the Dharavi Redevelopment Project/Slum Rehabilitation Authority (DRP/SRA), which oversees the project executed by the Adani Group.
NGOs such as the Global Giving Foundation and the All India Police Jan Seva Sangathna have inquired about the period of free maintenance for rehabilitated flats. The Enlighten Foundation has emphasized that both residents and commercial premises owners support the project and view opposition as coming from a minority with vested interests.
The survey, launched on March 18, aims to gather data from lakhs of residents to help the state government determine rehabilitation eligibility. It has already completed over 11,000 tenements through door-to-door visits.
The Thevar Samajam, representing Dharavi’s largest Tamil community, has reiterated its support for the project, expressing eagerness to be part of the redevelopment.
The DRP/SRA, in collaboration with Dharavi Redevelopment Project Private Ltd (DRPPL), a joint venture between the Government of Maharashtra and the Adani Group, is spearheading the survey. The redevelopment project aims to provide better living conditions for over one million residents and create a sustainable, innovative ecosystem in Mumbai. Under the project, tenement holders will receive 350 square feet homes, 17 percent larger than other SRA schemes in Mumbai.
