87 Kg Of Expired Sweets? What FSSAI Found Inside Delhi’s Luxury Hotel Kitchens

Food safety inspections by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) at two major hotels in Delhi’s Aerocity area, Andaz Delhi and JW Marriott New Delhi, have uncovered several food safety and hygiene violations.

Separate inspections found expired food items, cockroaches, dirty utensils, malfunctioning refrigerators, water leakage and inadequate segregation of vegetarian and non-vegetarian food.

Andaz Delhi Inspection

At Andaz Delhi by Hyatt, the FSSAI team found inadequate arrangements for keeping vegetarian and non-vegetarian items separately.

The cutting boards used for both were found in the same water container.

Expired food items were detected, while foul odour and insect activity were reported around a chiller.

Cockroaches and flies were found in the room-dining kitchen, where non-vegetarian food was being prepared on a vegetarian burner.

The most significant violation was, however, reported in the halwai area, where around 87 kg of expired sweets were found and destroyed on the spot.

Expired cake bases, flies, and cockroaches were found in the pastry section.

The inspection further identified shortcomings in procurement and supply, including the absence of separate receiving arrangements for vegetarian and non-vegetarian products.

JW Marriott Inspection

The FSSAI team inspected JW Marriott New Delhi on August 24 and 25, recording 59 deficiencies across its kitchens, bakery, coffee shop, storage and bottling areas.

The inspection found issues including missing licences or endorsements for certain food products, incorrect labelling, visible particles in water, cockroaches and fruit flies, dirty utensils, defective refrigerators and freezers, broken tiles, water leakage and drainage problems.

Rotten fruits and food kept uncovered were found.

In one instance, prawns were labelled as juice and juice as prawns.

The bakery had cockroaches, broken containers and hairnets found among food-related deficiencies. Some food items were stored outside prescribed temperatures.

Personal hygiene concerns included chefs handling food while wearing jewellery and an employee working with an open wound.

Improperly worn hairnets, exposed electrical wires and defective switches were found. Rust was detected in a storage tank in the water-bottling area.

The inspections are significant ahead of the BRICS summit. Sources indicate that the hotels may accommodate foreign guests. The inspection reports, however, do not mention this.

FSSAI has directed both hotel managements to take corrective action. Samples were collected during the inspections.
