80th Independence Day: From Jodhpuri Bandhej To Leheriya, PM Modi’s Turban Journey

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has turned his Independence Day headgear into a recognisable feature of his annual appearance at the Red Fort. His choice of turbans has consistently brought regional colours, traditional patterns and Indian textile craftsmanship into the national spotlight.

PM Modi began this sartorial tradition in 2014 by wearing a deep red Jodhpuri Bandhej turban during his first Independence Day address from the Red Fort.

In 2026, the Prime Minister revisited the Bandhej tradition with a vibrant red tie-and-dye turban influenced by the cultural traditions of Rajasthan and Gujarat.

PM Modi completed the ensemble with a white kurta, chocolate-brown jacket and three pocket squares representing saffron, white and green.

A Decade of Distinctive Designs

Each Independence Day appearance has brought a distinct design, creating a colourful record of India’s textile traditions.

PM Modi selected a yellow turban featuring a multi-coloured criss-cross pattern in 2015.

A soft pink-and-yellow tie-and-dye design followed in 2016, while the Prime Minister chose a striking combination of deep red and yellow the next year.

Saffron became the dominant shade of his 2018 turban, with another traditional Indian colour palette appearing in 2019.

The pandemic changed his customary style in 2020, when PM Modi wore a white scarf bordered with saffron that functioned as a face covering.

In 2021, cream and saffron featured in his attire, while his 2022 look included a saffron turban decorated with red motifs and extended ends, teamed with a blue jacket.

A lively yellow, green and red Bandhani pattern marked his 2023 appearance.

The Prime Minister opted for another vibrant design in 2024 before choosing an orange, yellow and green Rajasthani Leheriya turban in 2025.

PM Modi’s decision to wear a red Bandhej turban again in 2026 created a connection between his latest Independence Day appearance and his first one in 2014.

The recurring tradition has gone beyond a fashion statement, bringing attention to India’s diverse weaving, dyeing and textile traditions.
