80th Independence Day: PM Modi’s Red Fort Speeches Average 91 Minutes, Highest Among PMs

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has registered the highest average duration for Independence Day addresses delivered from the Red Fort. His 13 speeches have lasted an average of 91 minutes, substantially exceeding the 52-minute average recorded by former Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao.

The figures released around the 80th Independence Day indicate that the duration of national addresses has increased across different periods of India’s political history.

Jawaharlal Nehru’s Independence Day speeches averaged 24 minutes, while Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s addresses averaged 30 minutes.

Indira Gandhi’s speeches had an average duration of 32 minutes, followed by Manmohan Singh at 42 minutes and Rajiv Gandhi at 47 minutes.

PM Modi has accumulated the greatest total speaking time from the Red Fort, even though he has addressed the nation on fewer Independence Days than some former Prime Ministers. His 13 addresses account for a combined 1,177 minutes of speaking time.

The total is considerably higher than Indira Gandhi’s 504 minutes across 16 speeches, Manmohan Singh’s 417 minutes from 10 addresses and Nehru’s 400 minutes over 17 speeches.

The comparison shows that PM Modi has delivered fewer Independence Day addresses while spending significantly longer on the historic platform during each appearance.

Jawaharlal Nehru continues to hold the record for the highest number of consecutive Independence Day addresses, with 17 speeches from the Red Fort.

Indira Gandhi follows with 16 such appearances, while PM Modi has delivered 13 addresses so far.

Among other former Prime Ministers, PV Narasimha Rao spoke for a combined 259 minutes across five speeches, while Rajiv Gandhi recorded 233 minutes over five addresses.

Vajpayee delivered six Independence Day speeches, with their combined duration reaching 177 minutes.

A Growing Independence Day Tradition

PM Modi’s extended Independence Day addresses have developed into a recognisable feature of the annual national celebrations.

The data shows how the length of Independence Day addresses has expanded alongside the increasingly detailed development vision presented to the country from the Red Fort.
