Shashi Tharoor
Member of the Lok Sabha and the Congress Working Committee Shashi Tharoor said that his forthcoming general elections from Thiruvananthapuram may be his last. He also talked about giving younger people the chance to run for office. Speaking to reporters on the fringes of a Congress event here on Thursday, Tharoor countered that given it’s politics, there was no definitive answer.
“I do believe that at some point, the time comes to make room for younger people. And that’s my thinking”, he said. In the same breath, he said, “In politics, there is another slogan which is ‘never say never'”. In response to a question concerning his statements made on a recent television program, he reiterated that he might be running for the Lok Sabha seat from Thiruvananthapuram in 2024.
“I didn’t say never, I said I think it will be my last election,” Tharoor clarified.

The leader of Congress remarked that if he were to run for office from Thiruvananthapuram, he would fight for the people with all of his might and as if it were his last election. After entering politics more than ten years ago, Tharoor won the Kerala seat of Thiruvananthapuram Lok Sabha in the 2009 general election, making his first appearance in Parliament.
By a wide margin of more than 95,000 votes, Tharoor defeated his nearest CPI opponent P Ramachandran Nair in his first election contest. He went on to win resounding victories in the Lok Sabha elections of 2014 and 2019, solidifying his control on the seat. Prior to embarking on his political career, Tharoor was employed by the United Nations. In 2006, he officially stood as India’s candidate for the UN Secretary-General, coming in second out of seven contenders.
