Slipping into clogs for everything from quick errands to long hours on your feet may feel comfortable, but experts warn that the habit could be damaging your foot health.
An orthopaedic surgeon has highlighted that while clogs are convenient, they may lack the structural support needed for prolonged wear.
Dr Manan Vora, a Mumbai-based orthopaedic surgeon, health educator, and co-founder of NutriByte Wellness, recently explained the risks associated with long-term use of clogs. He noted that despite their popularity, clogs such as Crocs may not provide adequate support for everyday, extended use.
According to Dr Vora, clogs are light, roomy, and easy to slip on, which explains their widespread appeal. He, however, pointed out that most models lack structured arch support and a firm heel cup.
This means the footwear does not hold the foot securely, often causing the toes to grip to maintain stability.
Dr Vora warned that wearing clogs for long periods can place strain on the arches, heels, and tendons. He said this risk is higher for flat-footed individuals, older adults, and people who spend many hours standing or walking.
The lack of heel stabilisation makes clogs unsuitable for long walks, workouts, or physical activity. This increases the risk of strain or injury.
The surgeon emphasised that clogs are best suited for short, low-demand activities. These include quick errands, light household chores, or mostly seated work where minimal foot support is required.
For more demanding activities, Dr Vora advised opting for shoes that offer proper arch support and firm heel stability. He stressed that while clogs can be worn occasionally, they should not be considered supportive footwear for daily or long-term use, particularly for those concerned about foot health.
