Dengue Cases Rise Across Tamil Nadu As Monsoon Intensifies Mosquito-Borne Disease Surveillance Efforts

Dengue infections are rising across Tamil Nadu following the onset of the monsoon, prompting the state health department to intensify surveillance and mosquito-control measures.

Officials said 244 of 1,320 people tested across the state were confirmed to have dengue. Nearly 200 cases are being detected daily. Until September 15, Tamil Nadu recorded 16,577 dengue infections and nine deaths.

Chennai remains the worst-affected district. As many as 156 fever patients were admitted to hospitals in the city in one day, with 87 testing positive for dengue.

High case numbers have emerged in Chengalpattu, Coimbatore, Tiruvannamalai, Krishnagiri, Salem, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Thanjavur and Villupuram.

The government has deployed more than 25,000 workers across Tamil Nadu. Teams are removing mosquito breeding sources, conducting sanitation drives and monitoring fever cases in vulnerable areas.

District administrations and health officials must strengthen preventive measures and ensure timely treatment.

Health Minister Arun Raj said dengue cases had increased marginally over the past seven days. He urged people not to panic.

Authorities advised residents to prevent stagnant water around homes and seek medical attention for persistent fever.

Naam Tamilar Katchi chief coordinator Seeman blamed alleged government negligence for the rise. He demanded large-scale distribution of nilavembu decoction and kabasura kudineer at crowded locations.

Anna University student Harish Kumar died after persistent fever. The Directorate of Public Health clarified that he did not have dengue and died from scrub typhus.

Dr Reddy’s Laboratories plans to introduce Takeda’s Qdenga vaccine in India during the first half of next year. The two-dose vaccine targets people aged four to 60 and covers all four dengue virus types.
