OpenAI Launches New Legal-Focused AI Platform; Escalating Race For Law Firm Users

OpenAI has launched Astra for Law, a legal-focused version of its GPT-6 Astra technology. The platform targets law firms and legal technology providers.

The company said the system can support legal research, draft legal advice and help developers create customised applications for lawyers.

It combines GPT-6 Astra with a dedicated index covering US case law, statutes, regulations and other legal materials. Specialised instructions support legal analysis and writing.

The launch adds to growing competition among major AI companies seeking business from law firms and legal departments.

Google expanded its Gemini Enterprise offerings for legal professionals last month. Anthropic has released legal tools for Claude users since January.

OpenAI said legal AI companies such as Harvey and Legora can build products using Astra for Law. The platform will connect with software providers including Relativity, Clio, Intapp and Thomson Reuters.

Thomson Reuters introduced Thomson 1.0 last month. The model uses its legal research content and draws on decades of proprietary legal material.

OpenAI said selected law firms will initially receive access through a special programme. The programme includes safeguards for confidential client work.

The company has worked with Sullivan and Cromwell, Ropes & Grey, Cooley, Latham and Watkins, and Wachtell Lipton while testing and developing legal AI applications.
