ADHD And Women’s Health: The Hidden Challenges Many Don’t Talk About

A new study from Ireland suggests that women with ADHD may face significantly greater reproductive health challenges throughout their lives, including during menstruation, pregnancy and menopause.

Researchers analysed data from 602 women aged between 18 and 69 years, including 377 participants who reported having ADHD and 225 without the condition.

The study examined menstrual health, pregnancy-related experiences and menopausal symptoms using established clinical assessment tools.

The findings showed that women with ADHD reported more menstrual irregularities and significantly more severe premenstrual symptoms than those without ADHD. They also experienced greater disruption to daily activities and were more likely to meet the criteria for premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD).

Researchers noted that menstrual health remains an often-overlooked aspect of ADHD care, despite its potential impact on quality of life and overall well-being.

The study also identified increased risks during the perinatal period.

Women with ADHD recorded higher scores for postpartum depression and were more likely to experience symptoms associated with the condition.

Women with ADHD also reported more unplanned pregnancies and pregnancy-related complications.

Researchers said difficulties with planning and healthcare management, combined with hormonal changes, may contribute to these challenges.

During menopause, women with ADHD experienced higher levels of anxiety, depression and other symptoms, and were more likely to use hormone replacement therapy.

While the study does not establish a direct causal link, it suggests that ADHD may play an important role in women’s reproductive health, highlighting the need for more personalised care across different life stages.
