A New Dengue Vaccine Is Here: Who Can Take QDENGA And Why It Matters

QDENGA becomes the first dengue vaccine approved for individuals aged 4-60 years, making a significant step in the fight against one of the world’s fastest-spreading mosquito-borne diseases.

The approval offers new hope for reducing dengue infections, hospitalisations, and severe complications, particularly in countries where the disease is widespread.

Japanese pharmaceutical company Takeda developed QDENGA to protect against all four dengue virus serotypes.

Unlike some earlier dengue vaccines, it can be administered regardless of whether a person has previously been infected with dengue.

Doctors will provide the vaccine in two doses; the second dose will be provided after three months from the first, under healthcare administration.

Health experts believe the approval could strengthen dengue prevention efforts, especially in regions that experience frequent outbreaks.

Dengue cases have risen sharply over the last few years due to factors such as climate change, rapid urbanisation, and the increasing spread of Aedes mosquitoes that transmit the virus.

Clinical studies have shown that QDENGA reduces the risk of symptomatic dengue and severe disease, making it a valuable addition to existing prevention measures.

Experts say that vaccination should complement—not replace—other protective steps, including eliminating stagnant water, using mosquito repellents, wearing full-sleeved clothing, and installing window screens.

Public health authorities will gradually introduce the vaccine based on local disease burden, availability, and immunisation strategies.

Eligible individuals should consult healthcare professionals to determine whether the vaccine is suitable for them.

The newly developed QDINGA vaccine can reduce dengue cases in the upcoming year.
