The Odyssey Records Christopher Nolan’s Biggest Global Opening Weekend

Christopher Nolan’s latest action-adventure epic, The Odyssey, has delivered a record-breaking start at the global box office, becoming the director’s biggest worldwide opening weekend collection to date.

The film pulled in an impressive USD 264.1 million globally in its opening weekend, beating the previous record set by ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ with USD 249 million and ‘The Dark Knight’ with USD 198 million.

According to the reports, the film earned USD 124.5 million domestically while the international market added USD 139.6 million.

Universal Pictures released The Odyssey on 17 July, and audiences turned out in force for Nolan’s adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek epic.

Matt Damon leads as Odysseus, with a star-studded cast that includes Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya and Charlize Theron.

Written and directed by Christopher Nolan, ‘The Odyssey’ follows Odysseus as he faces dangerous creatures and difficult challenges during his ten-year journey home after the Trojan War.

Along with its action and adventure, the story also focuses on the bond between Odysseus and his wife Penelope, played by Anne Hathaway.

Universal Pictures President of Domestic Theatrical Distribution Jim Orr said there was palpable excitement across the domestic market for the film during its opening weekend.

The movie topped both the domestic and global box office charts and attracted a broad audience, with nearly half of ticket buyers falling in the 18 to 34 age group.

The Odyssey marks Nolan’s first release since his Oscar-winning film Oppenheimer in 2023.

The strong opening has reinforced his reputation as one of Hollywood’s most successful filmmakers and has positioned the film for a strong run at the worldwide box office.
