PIB Warns Of Fake RTO e-Challan SMS Scam Targeting WhatsApp, UPI Users

The Press Information Bureau Fact Check unit has issued a caution regarding a sharp rise in fraudulent RTO e-challan messages circulating via SMS and WhatsApp. These deceptive communications impersonate official traffic fine notices and attempt to extract sensitive information from unsuspecting recipients.

The scammers circulate links, APK files, and PDF attachments designed to resemble legitimate notices.

Once accessed, these files may deploy malware, enabling unauthorised access to SMS records, financial applications, and confidential credentials. This intrusion allows fraudsters to intercept OTPs and execute illicit bank or UPI transactions.

An accompanying awareness video demonstrates the structure of such fraudulent messages and highlights the associated risks. It emphasises that users must verify any traffic challan exclusively through the official portal, Parivahan eChallan Portal, and avoid interacting with unknown links or downloads.

Authorities have observed a significant escalation in such scams across India during 2025-2026.

Numerous individuals have reportedly suffered considerable financial losses due to these sophisticated tactics.

The advisory underscores the importance of ignoring unsolicited challan alerts and refraining from installing applications from unverified sources.

Users must exercise vigilance and rely solely on authorised platforms such as official app stores for downloads.

The PIB reiterates that adherence to these precautions remains critical in mitigating the risk of financial fraud and safeguarding personal data.
