Producer SS Karthikeya revealed that the creators of ‘Varanasi’ reconstructed the city’s famous ghats with exceptional attention to detail to realise the vision of director SS Rajamouli.
While addressing audiences at the Comic Con Experience Mexico 2026, Karthikeya said the storyline is deeply rooted in Varanasi, widely recognised as the spiritual heart of India. He explained that although Rajamouli had conceptualised visually spectacular sequences along the ghats, shooting at the actual location was not feasible.
To address this, the production team conducted detailed groundwork by sending experts to Varanasi to collect measurements, references, and design inputs before recreating the environment.
Karthikeya added that the team carefully constructed the ghats piece by piece to ensure authenticity and to translate the director’s imagination accurately onto the screen.
This approach allowed the filmmakers to replicate the atmosphere of one of the oldest living cities while maintaining creative control over large-scale sequences.
The project has already attracted significant attention, with the first glimpses of Mahesh Babu as Rudhra, Prithviraj Sukumaran as Kumbha, and Priyanka Chopra Jonas as Mandakini creating strong buzz across social media platforms.
As excitement builds, ‘Varanasi’ will release in theatres worldwide on April 7, 2027.
Industry watchers consider it one of the most anticipated Indian films because of its scale, star cast, and creative ambition.
The film also represents the next directorial venture of SS Rajamouli after the international success of RRR, which secured an Academy Award for Best Original Song in 2023.
With its detailed set design and expansive storytelling, the film aims to deliver an immersive cinematic experience inspired by the cultural richness of Varanasi.
The scale of the project reflects the evolving global stature and technical excellence of Indian filmmaking.
