PIB Fact Check Exposes Fake RBI Letter Promising ₹34 Lakh For Old Coins

A recent post by PIB Fact Check has exposed a counterfeit letter falsely issued in the name of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).

The fraudulent document promises ₹3.4 million in exchange for old coins. It also demands ₹700 as form charges and ₹12,150 towards delivery expenses.

The letter carries fabricated stamps and forged logos to appear authentic.

Authorities clarified that the document is entirely bogus. Fraudsters designed it to mislead recipients and extract advance payments under false pretences.

The communication attempts to capitalise on public curiosity about rare coins and unclaimed financial entitlements.

RBI Advisory: No Fees, No Rewards, No Unsolicited Communication

The RBI’s official advisory issued in 2012, referenced in the PIB post, clearly states that the central bank never solicits money upfront. It does not request processing fees. It does not seek personal banking details through unsolicited letters or emails.

The regulator does not distribute prize money, lottery winnings, or rewards in exchange for advance payments.

The advisory emphasises that any such demand constitutes a scam. The RBI instructs citizens to disregard suspicious communications and report them to the appropriate authorities.

The central bank maintains strict communication protocols. It does not authorise third parties to collect funds on its behalf.

This episode reflects a broader pattern of advance-fee fraud schemes operating across India.

Criminal networks continue to exploit consumer trust and financial aspiration. They craft convincing documents.

Criminal network deploys official insignia. They rely on urgency and reward promises to induce compliance.

Data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) for 2022 indicates that financial frauds, including advance-fee scams, have caused reported losses exceeding ₹1,000 crore annually.

These schemes often target individuals seeking windfall gains, dormant assets, or historical currency exchanges.

Regulators and enforcement agencies urge heightened vigilance. Citizens must verify claims through official RBI channels. They must avoid transferring funds in response to unsolicited offers. Prompt reporting strengthens institutional response and curbs systemic financial deception.
