During a recent episode of Wheel of Fortune, Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar turned the spotlight on the growing dependence on mobile phones among children. He remarked that a glance at a single online video frequently turns into hours of uninterrupted scrolling.
He explained that what appears to be harmless entertainment can quickly occupy five to six hours of a child’s day, describing the pattern as a subtle but powerful trap.
Akshay interacted with contestants Akash Singh, Priyanshi Singh and Prateek Chaturvedi in a meaningful exchange about technology, influence and modern parenting.
Expanding the discussion to the audience, he asked how many parents believed their children had developed an unhealthy attachment to mobile devices.
A member of the audience shared that many youngsters now refuse to eat without watching something on a screen.
In response, Akshay suggested that parents must reflect on their own role, noting that adults often hand over smartphones to children at a very young age.
The actor pointed out that prolonged exposure to screens can have serious consequences. He recalled a conversation with a friend who attributed worsening diabetes to spending more than six hours daily watching short online videos.
Akshay also mentioned reports of people enrolling in digital rehabilitation programmes due to excessive usage. He urged parents to identify warning signs early and take corrective steps, stressing that children depend on adults for direction and boundaries.
To illustrate the importance of learning through experience, Akshay referenced a traditional practice from Native American communities, where children sometimes learn caution by facing minor consequences under supervision. He used this example to emphasise discipline and self-awareness.
Concluding the segment, Akshay clarified that he was merely sharing his thoughts. He added that every parent must decide the most suitable approach for their family, as no one understands a child better than their own guardians.
