PIB Fact Check Debunks Viral AI Video Falsely Claiming Iranian Missile Strike On Indian Tanker

India’s official PIB Fact Check unit has dismissed a viral video that falsely claimed an Iranian missile strike targeted an Indian oil tanker.

Authorities confirmed that the footage is artificially generated and does not depict a real incident.

Officials analysed the video frame by frame. Their examination revealed several irregularities that suggested synthetic manipulation.

The crew’s movements appeared unnatural, and the surrounding visuals lacked the consistency normally seen in genuine recordings.

The fact-checking unit also noted the absence of credible media reports confirming such an attack.

Major global news outlets did not report any missile strike on an Indian tanker. This absence reinforced the conclusion that the circulating clip was fabricated.

Independent verification by the digital research organisation DFRAC reached a similar conclusion.

Investigators used advanced AI detection platforms, including Hive Moderation, to assess the authenticity of the video.

The tool flagged the footage as synthetic content generated using artificial intelligence.

Researchers observed that such manipulated material often surfaces during periods of geopolitical tension.

The video appeared online at a time when discussions about Iran and regional maritime routes had intensified.

Analysts warned that deepfakes increasingly exploit sensitive global developments to spread misinformation.

These deceptive videos can trigger confusion and heighten anxiety among viewers.

The misleading claim gained traction alongside reports of legitimate Indian oil tanker movements near Iranian ports.

However, officials clarified that no missile attack occurred and no casualties or confirmed incidents were reported.

Authorities urged the public to verify sensitive information through credible sources before sharing content online.
