PIB Fact Check Debunks Deepfake Video Falsely Attributing Taliban Remarks To Army Chief

The Government of India on Monday rejected a misleading and digitally altered video circulating on social media platforms that falsely depicts Chief of the Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi making remarks on India’s alleged engagement with the Taliban.

The Press Information Bureau (PIB) Fact Check Unit has identified the clip as an AI-generated deepfake and stated that it forms part of a wider misinformation campaign linked to Pakistan-aligned propaganda networks.

According to the PIB, advanced artificial intelligence tools have manipulated authentic footage from a recent official engagement of the Army Chief by inserting fabricated audio and altering context to misrepresent his statements.

The altered content falsely claims that India provides financial or strategic support to the Taliban, a charge that the government has categorically denied as baseless and misleading.

Officials clarified that authorities recorded the original footage during a press conference held after the Passing Out Parade of the 150th Course at the National Defence Academy in Pune.

In the verified address, General Dwivedi discussed the prevailing security situation and stated that ‘Operation Sindoor’ remains ongoing, with the Armed Forces maintaining high operational readiness for any contingencies. He added that while there is a temporary cessation of hostilities, all three services are focusing on strengthening joint operational synergy and preparing for future warfare requirements, including potential scenarios referred to as ‘Operation Sindoor 2.0’ if required.

The PIB urged citizens to remain cautious while consuming online content and rely only on official government sources for verified information. It also warned that AI-generated deepfakes are increasingly being used to spread disinformation and manipulate public perception, reaffirming its commitment to identifying such content and taking strict action against those responsible.
