The PIB Fact Check unit has dismantled a fabricated video that falsely portrays Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman endorsing a fraudulent investment platform. The clip claims that investors can earn ₹16 lakh per month by depositing ₹22,000.
Authorities have confirmed that the video is entirely AI-generated and misleading. The altered footage includes scripted subtitles referencing a so-called ‘government programme’.
Fraudsters designed the presentation to appear official and credible. They further circulated the video widely on social media platforms through paid advertisements.
The objective was clear. The perpetrators sought to exploit public confidence in senior government officials and lure unsuspecting citizens into phishing traps.
Investigators observed that the doctored content began circulating in late 2025. Since then, similar deceptive campaigns have intensified.
Cybersecurity assessments indicate a 300 per cent surge in deepfake videos targeting prominent Indian leaders in 2026.
Criminal networks now deploy advanced artificial intelligence tools to replicate voices, facial expressions and speech patterns with alarming precision. These schemes typically redirect viewers to fraudulent websites. Victims are prompted to share personal information, banking credentials or make initial deposits.
The promise of extraordinary financial returns serves as the primary bait. Experts emphasise that such claims defy basic economic logic and should immediately trigger suspicion.
The PIB Fact Check division urged citizens to verify information through official government channels before acting on investment offers.
Authorities advised the public to scrutinise digital content, particularly videos featuring public figures making financial endorsements.
Cybersecurity professionals recommend avoiding links embedded in unsolicited advertisements. They also encourage reporting suspicious content to relevant platforms and law enforcement agencies.
The incident, however, highlights the expanding misuse of artificial intelligence in financial fraud. It reinforces the urgent need for digital literacy and regulatory vigilance.
As technology evolves, government agencies, financial institutions and technology platforms must coordinate their actions to counter online deception. They must work together to safeguard public trust.
