Old EVM Protest Video Resurfaces As Recent Jantar Mantar Demonstration: PIB Fact Check

Several social media posts have circulated a video claiming to show a protest against electronic voting machines (EVMs) and the Chief Election Commissioner at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar.

The Press Information Bureau’s Fact Check unit examined the footage and found that it was old, dating back to January 2024.

The video is now being shared in a misleading context, according to the government’s fact-check.

Independent fact-checking reports have traced the same footage to an anti-EVM demonstration held at Jantar Mantar on 31 January 2024.

The Quint reported on 28 September 2026 that the video falsely portrayed an earlier protest as a recent demonstration demanding the Chief Election Commissioner’s resignation.

CyberPeace Research likewise identified the footage as recording an anti-EVM protest at the Delhi venue in January 2024.

The PIB warning cautions users against accepting the circulating claim as evidence of a current demonstration.

The old footage does not establish that the protest described in the posts took place.

The Fact Check unit has advised social media users not to fall for misleading claims or circulate unverified information. It has urged people to rely on verified sources when assessing online content.

The case highlights how older footage can resurface online with a new description and create a false impression about when or why an event occurred.

Checking the original date and context before sharing videos can help prevent the spread of misinformation.
