On Sunday, the Income Tax Department clarified that the deadline for filing Income Tax Returns (ITRs) will remain 15 September. The department dismissed misleading messages circulating online that falsely claimed the deadline extended further.
In an official statement, the department said fake posts were spreading the claim that the ITR filing date, originally set for 31 July 2025 and later extended to 15 September 2025, moved to 30 September.
Taking to X, the Income Tax Department posted, “A fake news is in circulation stating that the due of filing ITRs (originally due on 31.07.2025, and extended to 15.09.2025) has been further extended to 30.09.2025.”
The department urged taxpayers to follow only official updates from the verified handle @IncomeTaxIndia and avoid unverified social media posts.
The department also highlighted that its helpdesk is operating round the clock to support taxpayers with ITR filing, tax payments, and related services.
“To assist taxpayers for ITR filing, tax payment and other related services, our helpdesk is functioning on a 24×7 basis, and we are providing support through calls, live chats, WebEx sessions & Twitter/X,” the post added.
Earlier on Saturday, the Income Tax Department announced that taxpayers and professionals had filed over six crore ITRs for the Assessment Year 2025-26 and thanked them for reaching this milestone.
In a separate post, the Department added, “Thank you taxpayers & tax professionals for helping us reach the milestone of 6 crore Income Tax Returns (ITRs) as of now and still counting.”
“We urge all those who haven’t filed ITR for AY 2025-26, to file at the earliest to avoid last minute rush. Let’s continue this momentum!” it further noted.
With Monday marking the final day to submit ITRs, the department has reminded taxpayers to complete their filings to avoid penalties and interest charges.
