Silent Cinema Returns As ‘Gandhi Talks’ Sets January 30 Theatrical Release

Actors Vijay Sethupathi, Arvind Swamy and Aditi Rao Hydari will appear together in the bold silent film Gandhi Talks, set to release in theatres on January 30.

Uniquely, the film avoids spoken dialogue, choosing visual storytelling to convey its themes.

Speaking about the concept, director Kishore Belekar described Gandhi Talks as a film built on trust in silence.

Kishore Belekar shared, “Gandhi Talks is a film about trusting silence. As Indian cinema marks over a century of storytelling, we wanted to return to the medium’s most elemental form pure performance and emotion.”

“The actors embraced that vulnerability completely, and AR Rahman’s score became the film’s voice. With Zee Studios’, Meera Chopra’s support, we were able to make a bold, honest piece of cinema,” he added.

Additionally, AR Rahman’s music emerged as the film’s voice, made possible with the support of Zee Studios and Meera Chopra.

At a time when films often rely on scale and sound, Gandhi Talks embraces restraint and emotional subtlety. Crucially, Rahman’s score guides viewers through the story, functioning as a narrator in the absence of spoken words.

The ensemble cast brings together Vijay Sethupathi, Arvind Swamy, Aditi Rao Hydari and Siddharth Jadhav, strengthening the film’s distinctive cinematic approach.

The filmmakers reportedly frame the film as a black comedy. Gandhi Talks examines the contrast between Mahatma Gandhi’s ideals and his presence on currency notes.

Central to the story is a young man’s struggle for money and his encounter with a thief, highlighting irony and social conflict through silence.

Previously, Vijay Sethupathi appeared in Thalaivan Thalaivii, a romantic comedy directed by Pandiraj and co-starring Nithya Menon. Meanwhile, Aditi Rao Hydari was last seen in Hey! Sinamika, directed by Brinda, alongside Dulquer Salmaan, Kajal Aggarwal and Nakshatra Nagesh.

Separately, Arvind Swamy’s most recent big-screen appearance was in Anupam Kher’s Tanvi The Great.
