PIB Debunks Viral Claim Of India–Somaliland Talks With PM Modi

The Press Information Bureau’s (PIB) Fact Check unit on Saturday dismissed as false a viral social media claim suggesting that Prime Minister Narendra Modi held official talks with the President of the self-declared Republic of Somaliland.

The clarification came after a post from an X account named ‘The Republic of Somaliland’ claimed that a historic diplomatic engagement had taken place between India and Somaliland, and that formal recognition by India was imminent.

The post further alleged that Somalia had recalled its ambassador to India over alleged support for Somaliland–India relations, describing the episode as a diplomatic setback for Mogadishu and a strategic win for Hargeisa.

The claims quickly gained traction online, prompting speculation about a major shift in India’s foreign policy stance in the Horn of Africa.

However, no official announcement or confirmation accompanied the assertions made in the post.

PIB Fact Check Issues Warning

Responding swiftly, the PIB Fact Check unit reposted the viral content and categorically rejected the claims.

In its statement, the government’s fact-checking arm said the information circulating on social media was fake and misleading.

“Fake news alert! The posts below are fake. Be vigilant against fake news on social media platforms,” PIB Fact Check stated, urging users to rely only on verified and official sources for information related to diplomacy and national affairs.

India does not recognise Somaliland as an independent state. It continues to acknowledge Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity in line with long-standing international consensus.

Any formal diplomatic engagement at the level claimed in the viral post would typically come through official government channels.

Officials and experts have repeatedly cautioned against unverified social media claims related to foreign relations. They warn that such posts can create confusion and misinform the public, especially when they involve sensitive geopolitical issues.

The incident underscores the growing challenge posed by misinformation on digital platforms and the importance of fact-checking before sharing or amplifying unverified claims.

Authorities have reiterated the need for users to exercise caution and discernment, especially when posts reference high-level diplomatic developments.
