Vizhinjam Port Enters New Phase With Full-Fledged EXIM Operations

Vizhinjam International Seaport began full-fledged Export-Import (EXIM) operations on Tuesday, marking a major milestone in its development and strengthening Kerala’s position on the global maritime map.

Kerala Chief Minister VD Satheesan inaugurated the new phase in the presence of Industries Minister PK Kunhalikutty, M Vincent MLA, maritime officials and other dignitaries.

EXIM operations will allow the port to handle cargo being imported into and exported from India, alongside its existing transhipment activities.

Satheesan described the development as a proud moment and said Vizhinjam could become a gateway to the world. He highlighted the need for stronger road and rail connectivity and greater private investment to maximise the port’s potential.

Located just 10 nautical miles from major international shipping routes, Vizhinjam has a natural 18–20 metre draft and can handle Ultra Large Container Vessels.

Commercial operations began in December 2024, with Vizhinjam handling over 2.28 million TEUs and 1,100 vessels, including 80+ ULCVs

EXIM operations could reduce India’s reliance on overseas transhipment hubs, cut transit times and lower logistics costs.

Covering Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, the port will further improve global market access and create over 5,000 direct and indirect jobs.

The ₹16,000-crore Phase 2 expansion will further increase Vizhinjam’s annual capacity to 5.7 million TEUs by December 2028.

The project will add 1,200 metres of container berth, permanent rail connectivity, improved road links, logistics parks and warehousing facilities.

With EXIM operations now underway, Vizhinjam is moving beyond its role as a transhipment hub to emerge as a major maritime gateway for India, supporting trade, investment and economic growth across Kerala and South India.
