TCS Gearing Up to Build Generative AI Technology Like ChatGPT

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) is developing a similar generative AI Tech like ChatGPT that will be utilized for generating enterprise code, stated by N Ganapathy Subramaniam, the Chief Operating Officer of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS),

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) is developing generative artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms to generate enterprise code using the company’s internal code, data, and resources. The algorithms will use large language modelling functions similar to chatbots such as ChatGPT. TCS plans to use its knowledge as a base for the algorithms, which will generate code that the company is willing to license. TCS is still working on the use cases for the technology and believes enterprise usage of these generative AI solutions requires further finetuning in terms of ownership and intellectual property of the end products.

TCS plans to roll out some of its proprietary generative AI solutions before the retirement of Subramaniam, who expects the solutions to be focused on building models and generating code that can be deployed. Additionally, he mentioned that TCS needs its own solution for secure and contextual generative AI to accelerate client projects, instead of relying on multiple large language tools from different providers.

Clients are willing to use generative AI, but as a supplier, TCS has an obligation to provide solutions that are free of infringement and ensure full ownership of the intellectual property, he added. Moreover, he stated that the industry needs to wait for the regulations governing these solutions to mature further to fully realize the potential of the technology.

Moreover, Subramaniam believes that creating new roles for “prompt engineers” within TCS who can effectively communicate contextual queries to large language models for enterprise requirements is a huge opportunity. He believes that the way questions are prompted to generative AI platforms is crucial, and the proposed role of prompt engineers will be critical and as important as having engineering, mathematical or analytical skills. However, the role is still conceptualized and awaits approval.

Integrating its generative AI offering with its low-code software development platform MasterCraft is an opportunity that TCS is considering. This move would be similar to Copilot, which is a solution launched in October 2021 by Microsoft-owned GitHub and OpenAI to auto-generate code and help speed up the process of writing software programs.

Subramaniam stated that currently, more than 100 clients are using TCS’s MasterCraft tool. Although they have not integrated ChatGPT-like solutions for data pattern intelligence into it, TCS plans to do so eventually, which aligns with their vision for MasterCraft to be an intelligent low-code platform. Additionally, TCS has already developed several internal use cases using generative AI solutions while working with global partners.
