The benchmark equity indices Sensex and Nifty recovered on Tuesday, with purchasing in index majors Tata Consultancy Services, Tata Motors, and Sun Pharma amid relatively robust global markets.
The 30-share BSE Sensex jumped 305.09 points, or 0.42 percent, to 73,095.22. The index was impacted by volatility in the early half of the session, but rises in index heavyweights helped the barometer close in positive territory. During the day, the Sensex rose 371.17 points, or 0.50 percent, to 73,161.30.
The Nifty finished 76.30 points or 0.34 percent higher at 22,198.35.
Tata Motors, Tata Consultancy Services, IndusInd Bank, Power Grid, Bharti Airtel, Sun Pharma, JSW Steel, and Tata Steel were among the Sensex’s top gainers.
The laggards included Bajaj Finance, State Bank of India, Bajaj Finserv, Axis Bank, and NTPC.
In Asian markets, Tokyo, Shanghai, and Hong Kong closed higher, while Seoul closed lower.
European markets were generally up.
The US markets closed modestly down on Monday.
Brent crude gained 0.16 percent to USD 82.66 a barrel.
According to exchange data, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) sold securities worth Rs 285.15 crore on Monday.
On Monday, the BSE benchmark slid 352.67 points, or 0.48 percent, to 72,790.13. The Nifty fell 90.65 points, or 0.41 percent, to 22,122.05.
