Indian benchmark indices finished almost flat on Monday after trading within a narrow range for most of the session.
Investors remained cautious as uncertainty persisted over a potential agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
The Nifty edged up 13.15 points, or 0.05 per cent, to 24,583.80. The Sensex gained 43.27 points, or 0.06 per cent, to settle at 78,542.44.
Selective sectoral gains kept the indices in positive territory despite weakness in PSU banks and FMCG shares.
Analysts said the 24,600-24,700 zone remains an immediate resistance area for the Nifty.
A sustained move above 24,700 could reinforce buying momentum and push the index towards 24,800.
On the downside, 24,500 remains a crucial support level.
Analysts said holding above this mark could prevent renewed weakness.
A decisive breach may intensify selling and expose the index to 24,400-24,300.
Both benchmarks fluctuated within a confined range before ending slightly higher.
Traders closely tracked global developments that could influence crude oil prices and overall risk appetite.
State Bank of India, ITC and Eternal emerged as the biggest Nifty laggards. The broader market produced mixed results.
The Nifty MidCap index rose 0.62 per cent, while the Nifty SmallCap index declined 0.27 per cent.
The Nifty PSU Bank index fell nearly 2 per cent, making it the weakest sectoral performer. Nifty Pharma and Nifty FMCG also closed lower.
Real estate shares attracted buying interest, with Nifty Realty emerging as the day’s top-performing sector.
Experts said the subdued movement reflected investor caution.
Market participants await clarity on geopolitical developments and their potential effects on energy prices and economic growth. They added that market momentum could remain constructive this week, with the final phase of Q1FY27 earnings likely to influence stock-specific and broader market activity.
