Indian equity markets opened higher on Tuesday, tracking cautious optimism across global markets, as investors closely monitored US-China trade developments and domestic Q2 FY26 earnings for market direction.
At the opening bell, the Sensex gained 98 points (0.12%) to reach 84,877, while the Nifty rose 26 points (0.10%) to 25,992, briefly testing the 26,000 mark.
Analysts noted that the Nifty continued to trade above its key support zone of 25,700–25,750, maintaining a sideways-to-bullish trend. They added that immediate resistance stands between 26,000 and 26,100, and a decisive breakout above 26,000 could push the index toward 26,200 in the near term.
“Markets are consolidating ahead of key earnings announcements,” said one analyst. “A clear move above 26,000 could indicate renewed momentum led by large-cap stocks.”
Among the Sensex gainers, Tata Steel, SBI, L&T, Bharti Airtel, Power Grid, HUL, Axis Bank, and Maruti Suzuki rose up to 0.7%, providing early support to the index. In contrast, ICICI Bank, Bajaj Finance, Asian Paints, Bharat Electronics, Bajaj Finserv, and Sun Pharma saw mild declines.
The broader market also showed resilience, with the Nifty MidCap index edging up 0.08% and the Nifty SmallCap index advancing 0.36%, signalling some buying interest in smaller stocks.
Sectorally, PSU banks led the gains, as the Nifty PSU Bank index jumped 1.2%, while auto and metal stocks also traded higher by around 0.15% each.
Globally, most Asian markets traded flat, but optimism grew around a potential tariff agreement between the US and China. Analysts believe a breakthrough in the upcoming Trump–Xi meeting could lift sentiment across global markets, where major indices like the S&P 500, Nikkei, and Kospi already hover near record highs.
“India’s strong GDP growth and steady corporate earnings continue to provide fundamental support,” experts added. However, they cautioned that high valuations might trigger foreign investor profit-taking if markets rally sharply.
