Delhi Launches First Cloud-Seeding Trial To Combat Air Pollution

The Delhi government has conducted its first cloud-seeding trial over several parts of the capital, including Burari, North Karol Bagh, Bhojpur, Mayur Vihar, and Sadakpur, officials confirmed on Tuesday.

The aircraft, which took off from Kanpur, carried out the experiment as part of the government’s strategy to tackle deteriorating air quality during the winter months. Humidity levels in clouds over Delhi ranged between 15–20%, and authorities expect possible rainfall in the city between 5 and 6 PM.

Last week, Delhi conducted an initial test flight over Burari, releasing small quantities of silver iodide and sodium chloride, chemicals used to stimulate rainfall. However, rain could not be induced due to low atmospheric moisture, which measured less than 20%, significantly below the 50% typically required for effective cloud seeding.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta described the cloud-seeding initiative as a necessary and pioneering step to address the city’s persistent environmental challenges.

Speaking to ANI, she said, “Cloud seeding is a necessity for Delhi and is the first experiment of its kind. We want to try it to see if it can help us control this very serious environmental problem.”

She added, “With the blessings of the people of Delhi, we hope this experiment will succeed and help us overcome environmental issues in the future.”

What Is Cloud Seeding?

Cloud seeding modifies the weather by introducing chemicals like silver iodide (AgI) or salt particles into clouds to trigger rainfall.
These particles act as nuclei, allowing moisture to condense into ice crystals that eventually form raindrops.

The method not only increases rainfall but also reduces pollution and improves air quality by washing airborne pollutants from the atmosphere. However, its effectiveness depends on suitable cloud conditions with sufficient moisture.

As Delhi explores innovative solutions to air pollution, authorities emphasise that subsequent trials and ideal atmospheric conditions will determine the overall success of the initiative.
