Indian benchmark indices started the financial year on a firm footing, closing Wednesday’s session with notable gains. Both the Sensex and Nifty rebounded after two consecutive days of decline, managing to sustain upward momentum despite some late-session fluctuations.
The Nifty ended the day at 22,679.40, registering a gain of 348 points or 1.56 per cent. The Sensex advanced by 1,186.77 points, or 1.65 per cent, to settle at 73,134.34.
The trading day began with strong optimism, supported by expectations of a possible easing in geopolitical tensions between the United States and Iran. As the session progressed, sentiment softened, leading to a partial retreat from intraday highs.
Even with this cooling of momentum, the indices maintained a solid upward close.
Leading contributors to the Nifty’s rise included Trent Limited, InterGlobe Aviation, and Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone, all of which recorded strong gains.
The broader market outperformed headline indices. The Nifty MidCap index climbed 2.24 per cent, while the Nifty SmallCap index jumped 3.24 per cent. This signalled robust investor interest.
Among sectors, public sector banks led the rally, with the PSU Bank index emerging as the top gainer.
The Chemical and Media indices also saw healthy buying activity. In contrast, the Healthcare and Pharma indices ended lower, slightly offsetting overall market gains.
According to market analysts, holding above the 22,500 level remains critical for the Nifty to avoid fresh selling pressure.
A drop below this threshold could drag the index towards 22,300, with stronger support seen around 21,700.
On the upside, the 23,000 level is considered an important psychological barrier and a key resistance zone.
Experts noted that the market’s ability to close higher, despite late volatility, was driven by widespread buying across segments.
Attention is now turning to key US economic data, including non-farm payrolls, ADP employment figures, and the unemployment rate, which may shape near-term market movements.
