Professor Jeffrey Sachs Hails Adani Group’s Role In India’s Infrastructure Growth; Praises Family-led Business Ethos

Professor Jeffrey D Sachs, renowned economist, Director of the Center for Sustainable Development at Columbia University and President of the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Solutions Network, described the Adani Group as a major contributor to India’s infrastructure-led growth and economic progress.

In his opening remarks at The World Symposium on ‘Ancient Wisdom for Modern Challenges’ in Varanasi on Monday, Professor Sachs acknowledged the Adani Group and Adani Foundation, the infrastructure major’s social welfare and development arm, for their work in sustainable development in India and globally.

During subsequent interactions, he described the Adani Group as a major driver of change and progress in India, highlighting its significant contribution to infrastructure expansion.

Professor Sachs also discussed the responsibilities that come with carrying a family name in business. Referring to the Adani Group, he said family-led enterprises represent their identity, values, heritage and responsibility towards society.

He emphasised that businesses must consider their contributions to the communities where they operate.

Corporate Accountability and Commercial Ambitions

Professor Sachs cited former Unilever CEO Paul Polman to illustrate the challenges of promoting social responsibility in publicly traded companies.

Despite Polman’s efforts to position Unilever as a socially responsible enterprise, shareholders, investors and analysts resisted his approach and expected him to prioritise financial returns.

He also questioned the pursuit of commercial opportunities in artificial intelligence without adequately addressing associated risks.

Referring to Anthropic, he highlighted the contrast between its CEO’s warnings about potentially catastrophic technological consequences and the company’s reported pursuit of a major initial public offering (IPO). He argued that businesses should give greater attention to these risks than to commercial ambitions.

Professor Sachs linked the responsibilities of family-led businesses towards society with the wider accountability expected from companies developing technologies with far-reaching consequences.
