The government has announced that the average electricity supply in rural areas has increased from 12.5 hours in 2014 to 22.6 hours in 2025, while urban areas now receive 23.4 hours of power daily.
Union Power and Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal stated, “It is our goal to make power accessible to everyone and all times and the government is aiming for 100 percent electrification of households across the country.”
The minister highlighted a significant rise in power generation capacity.
Fossil-based power capacity grew from 168 GW in 2014 to 246 GW by January 2025, marking a 46% increase.
Non-fossil capacity saw even greater growth, surging from around 80 GW in 2014 to approximately 220 GW in 2025—an increase of about 180%.
India’s transmission network has also expanded substantially, from 2.91 lakh circuit kilometers (ckm) in 2014 to 4.92 lakh ckm in 2025.
The minister credited government initiatives like Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana (DDUGJY), PM Sahaj Bijli Har Ghar Yojana (SAUBHAGYA), and the Pradhan Mantri Janjati Adivasi Nyaya Maha Abhiyan for improving electricity access over the past decade.
India has transitioned from being a net importer to a net exporter of power, with exports reaching 1,625 million units (MU) in 2025.
Energy shortages have also reduced from 4.2% in 2014 to just 0.1% in 2025, with further measures in place to address remaining challenges.
On the smart metering front, 2.13 crore smart meters have been installed, with approvals granted for 19.8 crore meters, 52.5 lakh distribution transformers (DTRs), and 2.1 lakh feeders.
The government is also prioritizing electric mobility, with plans to establish 1 lakh EV charging stations by 2030.
