Net Direct Tax Collections Rise 13% To Cross Rs 12.12 Lakh Crore

The government’s net direct tax collections rose 13 per cent to cross Rs 12.12 lakh crore between April 1 and September 17 of the current financial year, according to Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) data released on Friday.

Gross direct tax collections increased over 15 per cent year-on-year to Rs 14.3 lakh crore during the period.

Corporate tax collections grew 19.48 per cent to around Rs 5.56 lakh crore. Personal income tax and collections from Hindu Undivided Families rose 6 per cent to more than Rs 6.16 lakh crore.

Securities Transactions Tax (STT) collections jumped 53 per cent to Rs 40,214 crore during the period.

Refunds issued by the government surged more than 29 per cent to over Rs 2.2 lakh crore, the data showed.

Advance tax collections rose 16.18 per cent to Rs 5.22 lakh crore through September 17. Advance corporate tax payments increased 18 per cent to Rs 4.16 lakh crore, while non-corporate advance tax payments rose 9.24 per cent to Rs 1.06 lakh crore.

Meanwhile, India’s fiscal deficit stood at Rs 4.55 lakh crore during April-July of FY27. This accounted for 26.8 per cent of the full-year target, compared with 29.9 per cent during the same period last year.

For FY27, the Centre has budgeted a fiscal deficit of Rs 16.96 lakh crore, or 4.3 per cent of GDP. The government had achieved a 4.4 per cent fiscal deficit in FY26 and lowered the target to 4.3 per cent as part of its fiscal consolidation efforts.

Higher petroleum and fertiliser prices could raise subsidies and widen the fiscal deficit. A lower fiscal deficit reduces borrowing and frees funds for businesses and consumers.
