The Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) has achieved a landmark feat, recording a turnover of ₹1.70 lakh crore for the first time in the nation’s post-independence history.
The Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises confirmed this milestone for FY 2024–25, highlighting significant growth in production, sales, and employment generation.
At a press briefing held at KVIC headquarters in Rajghat, New Delhi, Chairman Manoj Kumar revealed provisional figures that reflect a 347 per cent rise in production and a 447 per cent increase in sales over the past 11 years.
Employment in the sector has also surged by 49.23%, now supporting 1.94 crore individuals-emphasising KVIC’s critical role in rural livelihood development.
Kumar attributed this transformation to the vision of a self-reliant India, inspired by Mahatma Gandhi’s legacy of Khadi, and driven by the ongoing ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ and ‘Viksit Bharat’ initiatives.
Production in FY 2024–25 reached ₹1.16 lakh crore, a sharp rise from ₹26,109 crore in 2013–14. Meanwhile, total sales hit ₹1.70 lakh crore, up from ₹31,154 crore.
The Khadi Gramodyog Bhawan in New Delhi also achieved a record turnover of ₹110.01 crore-more than double its 2013–14 figure.
The Khadi clothing segment, in particular, saw extraordinary growth. Production rose by 366 per cent to ₹3,783 crore, while sales soared by 561 per cent, reaching ₹7,145 crore.
This leap is credited to sustained national promotion, with significant endorsement from the Prime Minister himself.
KVIC’s flagship initiative, the Pradhan Mantri Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP), has enabled the establishment of over 10.18 lakh micro-units.
These ventures have generated employment for over 90 lakh people, backed by ₹27,166 crore in margin money subsidies.
The Gramodyog Vikas Yojana is another cornerstone of KVIC’s rural push. Its budget has seen a 134 per cent hike, reaching ₹60 crore for FY 2025–26.
KVIC has distributed over 2.87 lakh machines and toolkits, including pottery wheels, bee boxes, and incense stick machines to boost rural enterprise.
Training efforts have also borne fruit. In the last decade, 7.43 lakh individuals have been trained, of which over 57 per cent are women.
Additionally, women now constitute 80 per cent of the five lakh Khadi artisans, whose wages have risen by 275 per cent since 2013–14, including a 100 per cent hike in just the past three years.
“The progress we’re seeing is not just about numbers- it is about transforming rural India through skill development, entrepreneurship, and empowerment,” said Kumar. “It lays the groundwork for India’s ambition of becoming the world’s third-largest economy by 2047.”
