India’s R&D Spending Soars Over The Last Decade: Union Minister

India’s spending on Research and Development (R&D) has witnessed a remarkable increase, with the figure rising from Rs 60,196 crore in 2013-14 to Rs 1,27,381 crore over the past decade.

Union Minister of State for Science and Technology, Jitendra Singh, attributed this growth to government-led initiatives driving scientific advancements.

Minister Jitendra Singh spoke at the DISHA event, emphasizing the government’s strategic investments that are shaping India’s future economy.

He pointed out that the country’s emphasis on homegrown innovations in artificial intelligence (AI), biotechnology, and quantum computing is setting the stage for India to emerge as a leader in these fields.

Collaboration Between Academia, Industry, & Startups

The Union Minister stressed that the government is not just investing in research but also facilitating the seamless transition of innovations from labs to industries, which aligns with the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-reliant India).

He highlighted that academia, industry, and startups are all key contributors to India’s intellectual property-driven innovation ecosystem.

Singh also acknowledged the success of India’s policy shift, which has allowed private sector participation in strategic fields like space technology and nuclear research.

This approach, he noted, has led to faster technological advancements, increased efficiency, and greater global competitiveness.

AI-Powered Healthcare Solutions For Remote Areas

Addressing the success of AI-driven mobile telemedicine units, Singh highlighted how AI-powered diagnostics and telemedicine are revolutionizing healthcare, particularly in remote areas.

This has made high-quality healthcare services accessible and affordable.

However, Singh underscored the importance of striking a balance between AI and human expertise.

He emphasized that AI should complement human intelligence rather than replace it, especially in critical sectors like healthcare.

A hybrid approach, he argued, would ensure that technology enhances the role of skilled professionals in these fields.

Singh concluded by reiterating the government’s commitment to bolstering R&D, ensuring that India becomes a global leader in technological innovation.

With a focus on AI, biotechnology, and quantum computing, the country is poised to lead the charge in deep-tech advancements, contributing to both economic growth and societal well-being.
